About the Ukraine
Area
604,000 sq.km. Formerly the granary of the USSR. A flat, fertile, forested
plain with no natural borders.
Population of Ukraine for 2000 is 50,000,000 estimate. It is considered
to be Europe’s fifth most populous nation.
Peoples: The ethnic make-up of the population: Ukrainians constitute
73%, Russians – 22%, Jewish – 1%, Poles, Hungarians, Greeks, Romanians
and other account for the remaining four percent.
Economy: An important and agricultural power. Rich reserves of coal,
iron ore, oil and natural gas. 50% of USSR’s total agriculture production
was from Ukraine, After a faltering and painful start to economic reform,
the economy collapsed with hyper-inflation in 1992 with reduction to
a partially barter economy. By 1993 the government had had to reverse
policy and is working hard to establish a viable market economy.
Religion: The Church was severely persecuted under Communism. Freedom
of religion since 1990. Protestant – 3,2%. Growth – 9,2%
Outreach Challenges: Good, spiritual, theological training is the great
need. Virtually no pastors in evangelical churches have had any training
at all; preaching quality amply demonstrates the lack. Numerous Bible
schools, evening seminars, and other programs have been launched since
1989. Pray for establishing and development of good Theological Educational
Institutions to provide trained workers for Ukraine and beyond.
