On November 26, 2019, Ukrainian Evangelical Theological Seminary held its fourth English Day. The tradition was initiated a couple of years ago by the Director of English Language Services, Joshua Tokar.
At chapel on English Day, students practiced English by singing songs and leading parts of the service in English. They listened to the inspiring testimonies of Larysa Nevmerzhytska, a second-year student, who shared about her ministry in India in summer, and Valentyna Fedorchak, a first-year student, who stressed the importance of constantly rejoicing in the Lord. Guest speaker Dr. Richard Perhai, Director of Advanced Degrees at Kyiv Theological Seminary, preached from 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 on being thankful in all circumstances.
In the evening, an English movie theater was organized for students and a game room was available for students to continue to develop their language skills. The whole day was focused on leaving one’s language comfort zone and practicing English.
Regular English Days are organized at UETS to communicate how important learning English is. Plus, English is often essential for students’ futures. Whether it be to get a good-paying job after seminary, to have confidence to travel and participate in missions abroad, or to gain access to academic resources not available in Russian and Ukrainian, knowing English opens doors to new ministry opportunities.
We are delighted that English Day is becoming a tradition for our English language initiatives at UETS as we continue to develop a professional language learning program that advances students to new levels of competence and new possibilities for future ministry.
