On January 13, 2018, Volodymyr Zolotov, Coordinator of Practical Ministries and Instructor of Theology at UETS, was ordained as the pastor of Light for Ukraine Church.

Light for Ukraine Church is a unique church. It started as a ministry to 20 internally displaced people (IDPs) in 2015 and today almost 500 people attend the weekly Bible school for IPDs that the church started more than three years ago. This year’s Christmas concert at the church drew 450 refugees, many of whom were first-timers.

Also, realizing the need to focus not only on spiritual matters, leaders of the church set up a humanitarian center for IDPs to provide various types of support, including food and clothing. It is open during the week offering material, psychological and social help to the needy. The vision is to follow the example set by the Early Church when needy people learned to minister to other needy people.

Light for Ukraine Church is trying to meet relevant needs of Ukrainian society. According to the UN Refugee Agency, Ukraine is the ninth largest country in the world in terms of the number of internally displaced people. Following the start of conflict in eastern Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea in 2014, the Ukrainian government estimates there are 1.5 million IDPs.

The faculty, students and staff of Ukrainian Evangelical Theological Seminary wish Volodymyr all the best as he starts this journey of leading those who have suffered as a result of the ongoing war in Eastern Ukraine into the kingdom of God. May our Father in heaven give His wisdom from above to our co-laborer in God’s field to be a committed shepherd of God’s flock.

“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” (1 Peter 5:2-4)
